Combat Obscura Is The Most Real Documentary About Combat I've Seen In Years

The last two episodes of Zero Blog Thirty have focused on the documentary Combat Obscura. People all over the veteran/military world have been talking about this film and it’s easy to see why. It’s one of the first of its kind. There’s not a lot of commentary; it’s essentially a behind the scenes view of what the Marine Corps wouldn’t want you to see.

It’s filled with civilian casualties, injured children, drug use by service members in a combat zone, and probably most shocking to me, injuries and the death of Marines. For most films, we dont show our service members dying.

We asked Miles Lagoze, the Marine who directed and shot the film, about his editorial process, the relationship he has with the Marines in the film, and life after a deployment like this. Miles himself was injured in combat and gives an interview directly after shrapnel went into his head.
